We need to have a tardiness policy for our class for next semester because my pleas have not made much of a difference. Kaiya recommended $ for snacks, but I don’t think that’s “painful” enough for the offender. What are some other ideas?

public whipping?
I think that Kaiya’s idea is good. I mean, this isn’t a ‘grade’ class so we can’t have our grades go down. Maybe people who are late have to do extra work and read it out loud in front of the class…
$ for snacks sounds good…
If your late three times you gotta bring in food.
I kind of like that idea, but it isn’t much of a punishment and, besides, its not fair to those who don’t have money to spare. Maybe we all bring in breakfast once every other week, and those who have been late don’t get any? That’s kind of mean though….I don’t know
i think that the food money is a good idea, and if they are late for 1 week(1 tuesday and 1 thursday) they have to write a peech about why they were late, while we are eating the snacks.
I agree that bringing food is a good idea. Or having to bring something to class, like having to make a poem and reciting it.
i think every time someone is late to class they should have to stand in the frount of the class and sing a song…..haha that would be fun
I think that if someone is late to class, they should have to do extra work.
I like the bringing in food thing, but the problem is that that could reinforce negative behavior by rewarding the class for one student’s punishment (I am the child of a therapist). I think that maybe you should have to write a page about tardiness every other time your more than two minutes late.
I like both the ideas based off food. I don’t think that having a ‘bad’ punisment will necessarily be good because the person getting punished might not even change, which would mean that nobody else gets anything, and the late person feels really crappy. I think a reward for being on time type of system would be best.
So… I’m torn… My initial thought was to use your grade as a “stick.” For example, I imagined a policy something like- 6 tardies in a quarter and you earn a “U” (unsatisfactory) for the quarter. But I know what Rebecca says can be true about rewards. What do you think about trying a reward system for a quarter. If it works, we stick with it. If it doesn’t work, we try the other. What do you think? And what are good (cheap!!) rewards?
What about having someone who comes late has to spend time doing a leadership task that benefits the IHS community? Afterwards they have to follow through by documenting it. Amount of time spent “leading” should be determined by the class.
Rewards system? Interesting. I want candy! Kidding, sort of.
We should have a jar of questions like, “What is your personal vision and why?” and late people have to pick one and write a paragraph on it, and everyone gets candy. Hurrah!
I like Gary’s idea.
